Success Stories

Every success story represents a life reclaimed, a relationship built, and a community strengthened. These stories reflect the resilience of the people we serve and the power of housing paired with compassionate, wraparound support. While each journey is unique, they all share one truth: when people are met with care, dignity, and consistency, lasting change is possible.

Remembering Housing Work Legacy Participants

James S.

This October, we said goodbye to Jim—

A longtime member of the Housing Works family who taught us what dignity, humor, and human connection can look like, even at the end of life.

Jim’s story reflects both how we show up for our community and the unseen reality of frontline work. Our staff walk alongside people through addiction, trauma, illness, and loss—meeting urgent needs with compassion while carrying an emotional weight few ever see.

Stories like Jim’s are shaping how we care for one another—and why Rewriting Our Future must center both the communities we serve and the frontline staff who carry this work forward.

Djuan’s Journey

Djuan was homeless and living under the freeway in Venice, after getting evicted from her home, after of her beloved mother’s passing. She was a full-time caretaker for her mother for 21 years, and losing her mother and her home sent her into a deep depression; “It was extremely hard and I had no time to grieve or heal.” After spending some time in the hospital , a healthcare social worker referred Djuan to Housing Works where she met Catrice.

I first met Catrice at the Library so that she could help me with the down payment for a new place, and ever since that day, she has been a complete support system for me. She never failed to check on me, made sure I was going to any appointments, and really, any help I needed. I would not be here if it wasn’t for Catrice, you just don’t find case managers like her anymore.”
